OT security: five first steps for any plant
You do not need a large budget to make a plant network much harder to attack. Start with visibility, separation and access.

Plant networks were built for reliability, not for a connected world. As machines connect to cloud dashboards and remote support, they become reachable - and so do the risks.
Where to begin
These five steps are practical for almost any site and give the most protection for the effort:
- Know what is on the network: list every controller, HMI, switch and PC.
- Separate OT from IT, with one controlled path between them.
- Remove shared and default passwords, and give each person their own account.
- Make remote access go through one monitored, time-limited route.
- Back up PLC programs and configurations, and test that the backups restore.
Then watch continuously
Once the basics are in place, monitoring tuned for industrial protocols can flag unusual commands or new devices early - long before they become a stopped line.
